The city of Breda is the ninth largest city in the Netherlands. A digital twin has endless advantages for a city of this size, ranging from real-time monitoring to accurate AI predictions, meant to improve decision making.
The city of Breda is booming with ambition. They had two main goals. First, they wanted to fully use the potential of Digital Twin technology. Second, they were looking for a more efficient and quick way of decision making in light of an in complexity growing demand. The answer to these challenges was clear: working data-driven with decisions being supported by high-value data sources, maps and simulations.
Heroes proposed an integrated solution, the '3P-solution': Platform, Proces and People. With this, a roadmap was created which opened up the possibility to the implementation of a modern, cloud-based data platform in different stages. This platform integrates relational data (tables), spatial data (maps) and time series data (sensory) into a seamless solution. With this, all data can be moved to PowerBI, GIS-maps and an advanced Digital Twin- portal.
Why is a Digital Twin the ideal solution for the city of Breda? The Digital Twin functions as a digital representation of the city itself. It's like the beating heart of Breda, where real-time traffic is followed for better mobility and crowd management. It makes predictions possible, like the impact of free childcare on existing or possible future locations. It even allows for possibilities in area development, where smart choices are being made to boost prosperity.
Translate ambition to reachable steps: Big goals can seem overwhelming. By splitting them up into manageable quarterly results, you can offer a measurable value.
3P-solution: Don't just focus on IT-infrastructure (Platform), but also pay attention to the developments (Process) and make sure the employees (People) are prepared to work with data.
Dare to innovate: Innovation is the key to improving the quality of life in cities. Don't be scared to embrace new technologies and thereby improve the city for everyone.
The advantages are already becoming clear. Since last spring, the control room of the city has a real-time overview of the pedestrians in the city. During events like Kingsday and the Jazz-festival, it has already proven useful. Since the summer, traffic control installations have been installed for better traffic monitoring, as well as a smart map which offers insights into the management of rainwater drainage. This fall, the project will expand to social themes, like childcare and simulations for environmental development. With the Digital Twin, the city of Breda is taking an important step towards a more data-centred future, where the city is flourishing and innovating. The lessons learned can be an inspiration to other organizations who are striving towards growth and improvement.
